Skin Cancer Prevention Factors: Skin Type and and UV Index

Did you know that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S.? And of this type of cancer, basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, are the most common types. And both highly curable.

Now on the other hand, melanoma is much more dangerous ~ people do die from it. And most of these melanomas are caused by exposure to sun (UV) light.

As you’ve hopefully already guessed, the best way to help prevent skin cancer is to protect yourself from the sun.

Without getting to technical, these are some very general skin type factors for who’s at risk:

  • blond or red hair
  • blue or green eyes
  • lighter natural skin color
  • family history of skin cancer
  • personal history of skin cancer
  • a history of sunburns early in life
  • certain types and a large number of moles
  • exposure to the sun through work and play
  • skin that burns, freckles, reddens easily, becomes painful in the sun

CDC recommends five easy options for sun protection:

  • cover up
  • wear sunglasses
  • put a wide brim hat on
  • keep (SPF) 15 or higher sunscreen applied
  • seek shade, especially between 10 am–4 pm

And now for the best part of all. The EPA has an online forecast map that shows contour lines of predicted UV Index values during the solar noon hour. Before you venture out for a day in the sun go to UV Index Forecast page.

Whenever in doubt, check it out, before you go out.
